Happy Birthday Special K

October is here – and not only does that mean it’s time to start picking out a Halloween costume, but it’s also time to celebrate five Harlem Globetrotters’ birthdays. Handles, Special K, “The Shot”, Jet, and Hawk have the same birthdays as some other well-known people, and maybe one of them even has the same birthday as you.

Special K has been hooked on hoops since a basketball court was built at the end of his street when he was 6 years old. Special K was born in Panama City, but because his father thought the United States would provide better opportunities for Special K and his two brothers, he moved the family to the U.S. in 1989. The Globetrotter gained dual citizenship in 2007 when he became a U.S. citizen. When he’s not traveling with the team, Special K wishes he could be driving a Bentley Coupe. He claims he can cook an awesome dish of Arroz con Pollo. His 46-foot-6-inch hook shot is the official Guinness World Record for the longest hook shot ever made, and that range benefits him when attempting the Globetrotters’ 4-point shot from 35 feet. He is in his tenth season with the Globetrotters and has made his way from the court to the television screen, appearing on shows such as “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “The Bachelorette,” Disney XD’s “Kickin’ It,” and “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” Special K has even played basketball with Justin Bieber backstage before a television appearance. Even though he already has a long list of things he’s done, something he’d still like to do is go skydiving.

Also born on October 7: Simon Cowell (“X Factor” judge), Evan Longoria (MLB third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays), Charles Woodson (NFL free safety for the Oakland Raiders), Taylor Hicks (country singer and “American Idol” season 5 winner), Vladimir Putin (President of Russia), John Mellencamp (rock singer)
