Trotters to lend their perspective at forum for National Campaign to Stop Violence

(PHOENIX, July 23, 2013) – Harlem Globetrotters stars Big Easy Lofton and Handles Franklin are in Washington, D.C., today, in support of the National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) and the Do the Write Thing Challenge.

For the fourth time in five years, the Ambassadors of Goodwill™ will join several dignitaries and dozens of national student ambassadors from across the United States for the NCSV recognition dinner, to lend their perspective on prevailing over violence.

In an effort to impact schools and communities around the world, in the fall of 2012, the Globetrotters debuted a new community outreach program – designed in coordination with the NCSV – called, “The ABCs of Bullying Prevention.

The program, focusing on Action, Bravery, and Compassion, targets 6-12 year-old kids and involves Globetrotter players discussing the three key words in the ABCs, as well as tools that kids can use on a daily basis to reduce bullying.  The Globetrotters equate what it means to be part of a team to how kids can offer support to one another to help stop bullying.  The Globetrotters presented the “The ABCs of Bullying Prevention” to over 400 schools and community centers during their 2013 world tour.

Now celebrating its seventeenth year, the National Campaign to Stop Violence is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce violence and its impact on the lives of youth.  The core aim of NCSV is to help individual students make a commitment to take responsibility for ending violence in their lives, homes, schools, and communities.  Through the Do the Write Thing Challenge, 7th and 8th grade students discuss and provide writings in which these questions are answered:  How has violence affected my life?  What are the causes of youth violence?  What can I do to prevent youth violence?

Sponsored by Wonderful Pistachios, Greyhound Lines, Spalding, Russell Athletic and Howard Johnson Hotels, the Original Harlem Globetrotters are celebrating their 87th consecutive year, continuing a world famous tradition of ball handling wizardry, basketball artistry, and one-of-a-kind family entertainment that continues to thrill fans of all ages. Throughout their history, the Globetrotters have showcased their iconic talents in 122 countries and territories on six continents, often breaking down cultural and societal barriers while providing fans with their first-ever basketball experience.
