The holiday season has arrived and as children are eagerly waiting for holiday gifts, four Globetrotters – Dizzy, Buckets, Flip and TNT — will not only be awaiting a holiday present, but a birthday gift as well.
Basketball has been a part of Flip’s life since he was 4 years old. Growing up, his grandparents took him to Globetrotters games, and he always had that same love for entertaining people and putting smiles on their faces, like the Globetrotters. As a member of the track team in high school, Flip was a high jumper, and he has a 47-inch vertical leap, even though he is only 6 feet tall. While he was playing basketball at Moraine Valley Community College in his home state of Illinois, Flip’s high-soaring ability led to his arm getting pinned against the backboard as he was defending a dunk in a game in 2005. The rubber protector surrounding the glass backboard came loose, and the exposed glass sliced Flip’s elbow, causing him to need 22 stitches. He averaged 11 rebounds and 18 points a game during his college career. If the rookie for the Globetrotters was not playing basketball, he feels he would have been a good professional football receiver or personal trainer. Flip likes to keep his time off low-key by spending time with his family, but admits that he would love to go skydiving someday.
Also born on Dec. 9: Eric Bledsoe (NBA point guard for the Phoenix Suns), McKayla Maroney (gymnast who won an individual silver medal and a team gold medal competing for the U.S. in the 2012 Olympics), Kirk Douglas (actor), Donny Osmond (actor and singer), Kurt Angle (professional wrestler and Olympic gold medalist), Kara DioGuardi (songwriter and former judge on “American Idol”)
