Globetrotters Announce Winner of First-Ever Fan Draft

The Harlem Globetrotters are adding to their list of innovations this summer as they announce the winner of their first-ever “Draft Me” social media campaign: #GlobiesDraftContest. With over 300 online video submissions from hopefuls across the country, the Globetrotters have selected Mike Gombita of Eruinunk, Pa., to join the world’s most famous basketball team for a game on their 90th anniversary North American Tour.

Gombita impressed fans across social media with his flashy ball spinning and incredible backwards shot from center court. The 19-year-old college sophomore bested his competition after three rounds and earning the most fan votes online.

“I am extremely grateful to be the first ever fan drafted by the Harlem Globetrotters,” said Gambita. He added that his greatest motivation for entering the fan draft was to have an opportunity to play on a basketball court one more time.

Although the sophomore does not play for his college basketball team, he has been an avid player since the fifth grade and currently helps his dad coach a youth basketball team.

Congratulations to Mike “Gumby” Gombita on winning the first-ever Globetrotters “Draft Me” contest.
