Dunk, Splat, Score; Basketballs Dipped in Paint Create a Masterpiece

7-FOOT-8 HARLEM GLOBETROTTER TINY STURGESS AND TEAMMATE FLIGHT TIME LANG TEAM WITH CELEBRITY ARTIST DANIEL MALTZMAN TO PAINT AN ORIGINAL FOR AUCTION TO BENEFIT SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®

(LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15, 2103) – Masters of the hard court, their basketball artistry is unparalleled. Now, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters have added yet another innovative move that would make even Picasso proud.

Using basketballs dipped in paint and tossed upon a canvas, Globetrotters Tiny Sturgess – at 7-foot-8, the Guinness World Record holder as the world’s tallest professional basketball player – and Flight Time Lang recently teamed up with pop surrealist artist to the stars Daniel Maltzman to create a collaborative work entitled, “The Art & Soul of Basketball.”  The stunning masterpiece will be auctioned on eBay to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and features a mini-documentary video on the Globetrotters’ YouTube page showcasing its creation.

The creative pairing took place in Los Angeles during a break from the Harlem Globetrotters 2013 “You Write The Rules” World Tour. Donning protective gear, the players were right at home adding a pallet of colors to a “Maltzy” action original, using paint-laden basketballs instead of paint brushes. Maltzman’s contemporary works reflect pop culture with intense color and movement. He says, “I’ve been a Globetrotters fan since I was a kid, so it’s a real honor for me to become a ‘team player’ with them now.”

Collectors of Maltzman’s paintings include Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Adrian Greiner, Paris Hilton, Steve Wynn, Lee Iacocca and others. This was his first basketball collaboration.

“We always have fun in everything we do, so this was definitely no exception. Championing the cause for breast cancer awareness is part of our national commitment to fans, so this piece allows us to make a lasting impression that can actually help make a difference,” said Flight Time.

The 6-foot wide by 5-foot high piece was revealed to the public when Maltzman joins the Globetrotters at center court for a halftime presentation during the team’s game at STAPLES Center on Feb. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
