For the third consecutive year, the Ambassadors of Goodwill™, the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, teamed with ShopRite Partners In Caring for their Annual Turkey Bowling Invitational in Newark, to help increase awareness of the issue of hunger and to donate more than 100,000 pounds of turkey to local food banks during the holidays.
Globetrotters Blenda Rodriguez and Handles Franklin were each on a team that used five-pound frozen turkey replicas to try and knock down the most paper towel pins and claim the ShopRite Partners In Caring Turkey Bowling Invitational trophy. Team New Jersey, led by Blenda, edge Handles' Team New York squad 56-53 to claim Team New Jersey's first ever trophy in the three-year event. Both teams were awarded with 100 cases of frozen turkeys to donate to their local food bank.
Handles was able to bounce back, though, as later in the week in Philadelphia, he led Team South Jersey to an 86-74 win over Team Philadelphia, headlined by Globetrotters rookie TNT Maddox.
Over the past 10 years, ShopRite Partners In Caring has been able to deliver more than 700,000 pounds of frozen turkeys to food banks in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
“We’re proud to partner with the Harlem Globetrotters to help bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our communities,” said Christine Magyarits, spokeswoman for ShopRite Partners In Caring. “Providing turkeys to the food banks to help families sit down to a warm holiday meal has become a ShopRite Thanksgiving tradition.”
To help broaden its hunger fighting efforts, ShopRite Partners In Caring will be expanding this year’s Turkey Bowling Invitational beyond the New York and New Jersey area, testing out turkey bowling skills in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and South New Jersey.
